Opportunities to Hire Co-op Students (at no cost)
If you are looking for some help while also helping teens gain real-world work experience, there is an opportunity to hire (at no cost) high-school co-op students from throughout York Region (and some students may be able to commute to work placements throughout the GTA). Schools in the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) are helping their high-school students to find summer work to fulfill the co-op experiential component of their Specialist High Skills Major programs. The placements can be in any of a variety of sectors, including arts and culture, health and wellness, information and communication technology, business and law, non-profit, hospitality and tourism, construction and trades, manufacturing, and more. This is a partial list of industries that students are looking to work in, during their co-op terms:

Term Length The term lasts for 1 month, starting on July 3 and ending on August 3. Students and Schools All students are in grades 11 or 12, and attend one of these schools in York Region:
Work Arrangements Students work onsite at the business location, but if offsite work is required, the YCDSB can accommodate. Students work 8 hours per day, and specifics can be worked out with the co-op teacher. YCDSB covers workplace insurance. Assessments During the co-op term, the student will complete weekly log sheets, which will need to be signed by their supervisor (e.g., your team). The supervisor is also required to complete Employer Assessments twice during the placement period - mid-term, and at the end of the term. Compensation Students are not paid for their co-op term. Instead, students focus on the achievement of learning goals and the development of employment skills. Application Process Students need to apply for a co-op role. The quality of their application, school attendance, interview with their co-op teacher, and interview with the potential placement business determine acceptance. If there is a business that could be a fit, the YCDSB lead will coordinate with the relevant school to arrange a meeting between you and the co-op teacher. If there is a fit, the student, parent, business (placement), and teacher sign a Work Education Agreement (a Ministry document in place to protect the student).
